25 New Year’s Resolutions

Fidelity On Call has reached its 25th Anniversary year and we are celebrating with all things “25.” As we get ready to begin a new year, here are 25 resolutions we encourage travel nurses to consider:

1 I will take care of myself this year as proactively as I take care of my patients and customers.

_________

2 I will not let the little stressors of life upset me.

_________

3 I will be more patient when driving.

_________

4 I will treat myself to fresh new work shoes.

_________

5 I will pack a healthy lunch instead of eating out.

_________

6 I will go for a walk every day for at least 20 minutes.

_________

7 I will stay on top of my car maintenance – oil changes, tires, service appointments.

_________

8 I will laugh more and and enjoy each day that has been given to me.

_________

9 I will not hang out with negative people who drag me down.

_________

10 I will have REAL conversations and not rely on texting, messaging and more to interact with friends, family and work.

_________

11 I will watch less TV and instead read a book, work on a hobby, etc.

_________

12 I won’t let other people’s attitudes at work pull me down.

_________

13 I will not gossip. It is counter productive.

_________

14 I will plan better so I don’t always have to be in a rush.

_________

15 I will give up smoking.

_________

16 I will make sure that my health documentation and other annual responsibilities are promptly handled.

_________

17 I will say yes more. I will say no more.

_________

18 My self-talk will be like a friend talking with me and not negative or a put-down.

_________

19 I will not procrastinate or wait until the last minute to accomplish a task or assignment.

_________

20 I will drink less or not at all.

_________

21 I will learn to let go of grudges and forgive others. By forgiving them, I give myself a gift.

_________

22 I will spend less time on social media and more time interacting with my family and friends.

_________

23 I will overcome a fear that I have. For example, if I am afraid of heights or public speaking, I will be proactive on working through my fear.

_________

24 I will gain control over my feelings so I can think with a level head.

_________

25 I will volunteer more and give more to charity.

Fidelity On Call Gets A Visit From The Mean One

Everyone at Fidelity liked Christmas a lot
But the Grinch who showed up surely did NOT.

The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season
Don’t ask us why . . . we don’t know the reason.

It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right
Or maybe his shoes were really quite tight.

But whatever it was his head or his shoes
He was determined to give us Christmastime blues.

With his heart as cold, as cold as could be
He stormed through our office to steal all our glee.

He started with Jill since she was new to the team
He thought he could make her leave with a scream.

But she wasn’t the pushover he thought she would be,
“I love what we do here,” she said happily.

“No Grinch can upset me or steal all my joy,
You need to keep moving, I won’t be your toy.”

The Grinch didn’t like that – it made him quite mad.
The spirit in the office just couldn’t be glad . . .

But how could he stop it? What could he do?
He just couldn’t take it. He started to stew.

And while he was stewing he had a grand thought
I’ll change some nurse files I’ll never get caught.

So he went to the cabinets to find the nurse files
And started to throw them in big, messy piles

“What are you doing?” Erin said to the Grinch
“I know you want trouble. You can’t make me wince.”

“I’ve been here a while; I know the whole system”
And, then she surprised him and thoughtfully hugged him.

Now that was a feeling the Grinch never had
He always thought hugging was really quite bad

He must shake that feeling. That weird, funny feeling
That started his head really quite reeling

He ran from the files and started to wonder
What could he do? What could he plunder?

Then he got an idea! An incredible idea!
The Grinch got a wonderful, incredible idea!

“I know what to do”, the Grinch said with a chuckle
Their Christmastime joy will now surely buckle!

He had to find Sara – she was next on his list
He knew he could make her grumble and twist

But the Grinch didn’t get her Christmastime glee
He found her quite happy as happy could be

What was the reason? He failed to see.
Why was she happy? What could it be?

Sara just laughed and said to the Grinch
“Nothing you do could make me flinch.”

“You see I have been here a very long stretch
I know how to handle a Grinch that’s a wretch

You’re that way because you’re sad as can be
You’re lonely and sad and that shouldn’t be.

I know we can help you this Christmastime season
We’d love to do that – we don’t need a reason.”

The Grinch wasn’t sure. Was she really that nice?
He thought and he thought . . . he thought more than twice

This season was more than he could ever imagine
It made him have thoughts he had to examine

How could it be this happiness and glee
was spreading, yes spreading he thought thoughtfully

Maybe Jenny and Kellie and David and Pat
Would be just as happy. Now what about that?

What would he do? Now where could he go?
A weird feeling was starting now . . . down at his toes.

From his toes to his nose he started to glow
And, then his hard heart it started to grow.

“Mr Grinch we all love you. We are glad that you’re here
We know things can be hard, this time of year.”

But you don’t have to worry. You don’t have to fret
We’re here to make this Christmas your best one yet.

Then they all hugged him and he hugged them back
The Grinch was now happy – no more sad sack

And he knew that Christmas was more than just things
It was truly amazing. His heart started to sing.

And as he was singing he started to beam,
Because now he was part of Fidelity’s team.

Merry Christmas!

#NursesWeek: We Salute Our Fantastic Team of Travel Nurses

Every year from May 6 to May 12 we celebrate National #NursesWeek with the 6th being designated National Nurses Day. This has been a time-honored week and day since 1974 when it was moved from the original October to be celebrated around the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who, as you know, is considered the founder of modern nursing.

She turned what was considered an unimportant, low-status job into a respectable profession. She also improved hospitals by tackling their dirtiness and deterioration and making sanitary improvements for clean and safe hospitals. In addition, she wrote the first textbook for nurses, “Notes on Nursing.”

As I reflected on the importance of National #NursesWeek, I could not help but think about some of the experiences I have had with nurses. My very first one was in the late 60’s when I had a fantastic male nurse during a week long hospital stay. He was kind, caring, courteous and always there to help me through the process. He exhibited every quality that a great Fidelity On Call nurse would have.

Later, when yet another hospital stay came along, the nurse I remember most helped me cope with facing yet another surgery. Her words of encouragement meant everything to me.

Over the years, I have had excellent experiences and then some that I will say I truly want to forget. So, when establishing Fidelity On Call, it became vital to not only make the proper assignments for our hospital customers, but to hire those nurses that could make a lasting impression on every patient they worked with.

Nothing is more fun than to come into our office and have reviews waiting on our nurses from our customers. Why? Because their comments make us so proud of our “elite team.” Here are just a few examples:

  • Staff appreciates her knowledge and skill set.
  • Willing to do whatever the team needs; help others think outside the box.
  • He is very competent and has a great rapport with the staff and physicians.
  • She is spectacular.
  • Fit right in with the staff.
  • Exceptional skills and seasoned nurse. We are lucky to have her.
  • An amazing person to have working here.
  • We are ecstatic she is working with us. Our patients are very lucky.
  • We felt very lucky to have her. She received numerous compliments from patients and their families.
  • Phenomenal asset to our hospital.
  • She is the right fit with our staff.

Just how great is that? And it is a very small sampling of what we get to see in our office. We are so proud of our team.

Is it any wonder that our nurses are part of a profession that – for the last 16 years – has ranked as the most trusted profession in the U. S. (Gallup Survey). And, according to their research, nurses are viewed as having the highest ethical and honesty standards by 85% of those who took the survey!

Our hats are off to our fantastic nurses during National #NursesWeek.

But She Said She Was a Nurse

Frankly we were appalled when we read the article on Samantha Rivera, who said she was a nurse, and worked for a 13-week contract assignment through a staffing agency at a St. Louis Hospital – and in the ICU!

Her contract wasn’t extended and she applied at another staffing company. Thankfully, they were astute enough to realize she was not a nurse.

We cannot help but wonder how this could ever happen.
